IND vs NZ T20 World Cup 2026 Final: What Happens If Rain Disrupts the Ahmedabad Clash?
The much-anticipated T20 World Cup 2026 final between India national cricket team and New Zealand national cricket team is set to take place at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Led by Suryakumar Yadav, India will aim to defend their title and create history by winning back-to-back trophies in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. However, with weather forecasts raising concerns, fans are wondering what will happen if rain interrupts the highly anticipated final.
India Eye Historic Title Defence
India secured their place in the final after defeating England national cricket team in the semifinal. By reaching the summit clash again, India became only the third team after Pakistan national cricket team and Sri Lanka national cricket team to reach consecutive T20 World Cup finals.
Despite India’s strong form, New Zealand remain a formidable opponent. Historically, the Kiwis have maintained an unbeaten record against India in their previous T20 World Cup meetings, making the final even more intriguing.
What Happens If Rain Interrupts the Match?
According to rules set by the International Cricket Council (ICC), organisers will first attempt to complete the match on the scheduled day.
If rain affects play, the game may be shortened using the DLS method, allowing the match to reach a result if possible.
Reserve Day Rule Explained
If weather conditions prevent the match from finishing on the scheduled day, the final will move to a reserve day.
Importantly, the game will resume from the exact point where it stopped, rather than restarting from the beginning.
What If Rain Washes Out Both Days?
In the unlikely scenario that rain prevents a result even after the reserve day, the ICC rules state that both teams will be declared joint winners of the tournament.
What Happens If the Final Ends in a Tie?
If the final ends in a tie, the winner will be decided through a Super Over, where both teams play one additional over to determine the result.
If the Super Over also ends in a tie, additional Super Overs will continue until a clear winner is decided.
This rule was introduced after the controversial finish of the 2019 Cricket World Cup Final, when England national cricket team defeated New Zealand national cricket team on boundary count after the Super Over ended in a tie. The ICC later changed the rule to ensure that future finals produce a definitive winner.
