Iran has officially appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader following the death of his father Ali Khamenei. The decision comes amid escalating regional tensions as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East enters its tenth day, marked by missile and drone strikes across several countries.

The announcement was made on Sunday by the clerical body responsible for selecting Iran’s highest authority. Soon after, various Iranian institutions — including the foreign ministry, lawmakers, and security bodies — publicly declared their loyalty to the newly appointed leader.

In a statement released by Iran’s defense council, officials pledged unwavering support, stating they would follow the new commander-in-chief “until the last drop of our blood.”

War Tensions Rise After Leadership Change

The appointment could further intensify the ongoing conflict, particularly after strong comments from US President Donald Trump, who had previously described Mojtaba Khamenei as an “unacceptable” successor.

Speaking in an interview with The Times of Israel, Trump said the new Iranian leader “may not last long” if Tehran fails to gain Washington’s approval. When asked directly about the appointment, Trump responded cautiously, saying, “We’ll see what happens.”

The US president also noted that any decision to end the conflict would be taken jointly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump claimed that Iran had intended to destroy Israel before the conflict began. According to him, coordinated actions between Washington and Israel had prevented that outcome.

Israeli Strikes and Regional Attacks Continue

Following the leadership announcement, Israel reported launching a new round of strikes targeting Iranian regime infrastructure in central Iran. The Israeli military also confirmed attacks against Hezbollah positions in Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Iran and allied groups were believed to have launched retaliatory operations. Rocket and drone attacks targeted a US diplomatic facility near Baghdad International Airport, though Iraqi police sources said the projectiles were intercepted by the C-RAM defense system.

Security officials also reported a drone strike aimed at a US military base near Erbil Airport in Iraqi Kurdistan. Saudi Arabia’s defense forces said they intercepted another drone in the northern al-Jawf region.

In Bahrain, authorities reported that 32 people were injured after an Iranian drone struck the island of Sitra overnight. Among the wounded were a 17-year-old girl who suffered serious head and eye injuries and a two-month-old baby.

Iranian state media later broadcast footage of a missile allegedly fired toward Israel carrying the message: “At your command, Sayyid Mojtaba,” referencing the new leader.

Support from Regional Allies

The leadership transition was welcomed by Yemen’s Houthi movement, a key regional ally of Tehran.

In a statement posted on Telegram, the group congratulated Iran’s government and people on the selection of Mojtaba Khamenei, calling it an important step during a critical moment for the region.

A Historic and Controversial Transition

Mojtaba Khamenei’s appointment marks a historic shift in Iranian politics. For the first time since the Iranian Revolution, the country’s supreme leadership has passed directly from father to son.

The development is expected to spark debate within Iran, as the Islamic Republic was originally founded to eliminate hereditary rule following the overthrow of the Shah.

The leadership change follows the death of Ali Khamenei, who led Iran for 37 years before being killed in a US-Israeli strike on Tehran on February 28.

Senior Iranian officials, including veteran politician Ali Larijani, have called for national unity behind the new leader, saying the country must remain strong during this sensitive period.
